    Description

EARLY SHEFFIELD SILVERPLATE CHAMBERSTICK and SNUFFER!
[I apologize. I am a terrible photographer. Any dark blotches you see in the photos are from other things reflecting in the very reflective silver, such as my green phone case, Post-its, the overhead light, ceiling fan, dog, etc.]
    Early Sheffield
(c.1740 according to my parents’ notes but let’s say c.1840)
silverplate over copper candlestick (or chamberstick) and snuffer. They purchased this in 1998.
Lovely reeded design with flowers and an elongated ball-top snuffer. Fully functional plus this is a very showy, striking piece and a great example of a long-gone household necessity.
There are no markings at all except for an “O” at the bottom of the permanently attached part where the candle would sit. I
    think
that may be a hallmark of some sort but I could be wrong. There is also a removable, very shiny, highly-decorated bobeche with no markings.
There is no wax or tallow residue at all.
There is no copper showing through other than on the very bottom surface (SEE PIC #10). There are some almost-not-visible-to-the-naked eye, faint surface scratches on the very reflective tray part. You can enlarge and try to see these in PIC #6. It's really hard for me to get a good pic.
Sits perfectly straight on any flat surface where it is placed (SEE PICS). If it looks sideways or slanted in the pics, that's because I take terrible photos.
The snuffer itself has 3 very small dents on the body plus one that's a little bigger and is also on the body (SEE PICS, ESPECIALLY #7, #8, & #9). That one faces the candlestick itself so does not show when displayed. The open part of the snuffer has some “dents.” I don’t know how to describe those (BUT PLEASE SEE PIC #11). They are not a detriment to the appearance of the snuffer.
The hook that keeps the snuffer fitting in the hole in the thumb rest may have been re-soldered at some point during its years of existence. The thumb rest is not bent and it is very sturdy.
The tray is 6” across and 7” including the carrying / thumb rest part. It is about 4” tall. Of course, since it is not hollow ware, it is very heavy at over 1 pound!
