Description
Lovely English Matthew Boulton Sheffield Plate Chamberstick, with ribbed border and a removable bobeche, c.1820s-40s.Here we have a nice early piece by Matthew Boulton, a handsome chamberstick in heavy Sheffield Silver Plate on copper, with a ribbed edge and a removable bobeche, English, c.1820s-1840s. Both the bobeche and the inside of its stem are marked with a “W” within; the underside is marked with the two radiant stars/suns that were Boulton’s mark, with a circular mark between and a faintly engraved number 35.
This early Sheffield plate chamberstick has a broad, dished profile, with repeating ribs and a shallowly scalloped edge. It’s got the overall elegant design of late Georgian/William IV era silver, not too busy. The edge of the bobeche repeats that of the dished base, in condensed form.
Condition is very good, with but a little exposure of the copper base at the very top of the raised ribs at the edge, doubtless wear from a couple of centuries of thumbs rubbing them. The silvering is otherwise great on the visible surfaces, and it displays beautifully. There’s also typically a bit of copper exposure on the underside in a few spots, mostly rubbing from tabletops etc., which is very discreet or invisible as displayed. (See photos.) Otherwise no dents, dings, or other issues. A solid, quality piece all-around, and a prize for the collector of early Sheffield Plate, besides being a beautiful decorative object. I’ve included a photo to show it in an appropriate light in that regard too. It holds any candle of the current standard candlestick size. The dimensions are 6” in diameter, and 3” high including the bobeche.
