Description
Khon Dancer Wood CarvingThis is an intricate wooden figure of a Thai Khon dancer, entirely carved by hand.
The details are amazing! Notice all the patterns in the costume with "flames," the
details in the dancer's mask, and the flowing
belt hanging down the front. Looking
at actual photographs of Khon dancers, past and present,
you'll see the same
characteristics.
One arm is movable
and attached to the rest of the body with
an older
slotted head screw.
I've seen this detail (movable arm) a few times before on other dancer carvings but
I don't know what the significance is. There is also a small hole, about 1/8" wide, at the top of the shoulder,
near the movable arm. It looks like it was put there intentionally as though to insert
something (see last photo looking down on the shoulder with red arrow pointing to the hole).
Two of the fingers on the movable arm are damaged. The pinky finger has broken off
and the middle finger is chipped, mainly visible on the reverse side. There are a few other places with small nicks (such as on the knuckle of the other hand), or wear/small nicks to the extremities of the carving, but they aren't glaring and in keeping with the vintage nature of the piece.
Other than the movable arm and possibly the long piece at the top of the mask, this
appears to be carved from a single piece of wood. It is wonderfully 3-dimensional and
full of the movement of the dancer.
I don't see any cracks or splits in the wood (sorry, I don't know the type).
It could
use a dusting with
a soft brush in all the nooks and crannies.
It's about 14.5" high and the base is unmarked.
